Sveinlaug Sigurðardóttir, a preschool teacher and outdoor educator, shares insights into adventure journeys and outdoor learning at Krikaskóli. In outdoor education, emphasis is placed on learning that happens through free play in nature.
The aim of these journeys is to foster well-being, increase mindfulness, strengthen social skills, and build self-identity through creative free play and discovery-based learning.
She has 20 years of experience as a preschool teacher, with the last 11 years dedicated exclusively to outdoor education. I have a deep passion for being outdoors and believe that time spent in nature is essential for our life and health. I consider it very important to strengthen people’s connection to nature, to themselves, and to the community we belong to.
Útikennari á leikskólanum Rauðhól. M.Ed. í grunnskólakennslu með áherslu á útinám. Stýrir gróðurhúsi leikskólans ásamt því að fara mikið í ævintýraferðir með börnin út í nærumhverfið.

The Gaia Schools Network is a global community of diverse, place-based educational initiatives united by shared values and a commitment to regenerative, holistic education. Our vision is to cultivate learning environments that empower students, teachers, and families to thrive while contributing positively to their communities and the wider world.
Gaia Schools foster a deep connection with nature, community, and self-development, through participatory, inclusive, and learner-centred processes. At the heart of the network are schools that apply the Gaia Education 4D Framework, integrating the dimensions of Social, Ecological, Economic, and Worldview sustainability into their learning environments, curricula, and daily practices.
These schools act as living sustainability hubs and demonstration sites, inspiring and engaging their local communities and neighbourhoods while modelling pathways toward more resilient and regenerative futures.

Ecology of Life
My life has brought me from the global south and progressively to the northern hemisphere where I now sit at the top of the world in beautiful peaceful Iceland. With moving comes many life experiences and a need to create new community in each new place. Some more challenging than others. When true community is felt and experienced, it is a deep and lasting feeling that enhances my life and those who I choose to call my friends. My life feels complete and fulfilling when I have these close connections in my local place.
I am one of the founders of totel.ly. The process of totel.ly has gifted me personally with a closer community, a feeling I would like others to experience more in their everyday life, with a greater sense of awareness that we are part of a greater community of nature that takes care of us in ways we have yet to fully comprehend.
